Value, total and gap

Three layers that pull a single number out of the data and put it on screen — a focal callout, a running total, and the lead over second place.

1

What they share

These three layers each pull one number out of the data and animate it on screen. They share the same Value panel, so learning it once covers all three.

That panel carries Value Animation, Value Prefix, Value Postfix, Value Multiplier, Initial Value, Value Type, Decimals, Abbreviated Digits, Value Format, Value Sign, Function, and Rolling Period.

Value Animation set to rolling digits makes the number spin like an odometer. On a large focal number this is the single most effective styling choice available.

2

Value layer

The Value layer shows one figure from the data — usually the current top entity's — as a focal callout beside a race.

Its Item panel selects which entity the readout follows. Paired with a bar race, it gives viewers a large, readable number to watch while the bars carry the ranking.

3

Total layer

The Total layer shows the sum across all rows at the current moment, rather than any single entity.

It answers a question a race cannot: not "who is biggest" but "how big is all of this together". On a chart of country populations, the total is world population climbing — often a more striking number than any individual bar.

It carries the shared Value panel plus Text settings for styling.

4

Gap layer

The Gap layer shows the difference between two entities — most often the leader and second place.

Its Items panel selects First Item and Second Item, and sets Zero Color and Negative Color so the readout can change colour as the gap closes, crosses zero, or reverses.

This is the layer that makes a close race feel close. A bar chart where two bars are nearly equal is much less dramatic than a number counting down toward zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which layer shows the current leader's value?

The Value layer, with its Item panel set to follow the top entity.

Can a total include only some rows?

The Total layer sums across the rows in its spreadsheet. To total a subset, drive the layer from a spreadsheet containing only those rows.

What is Abbreviated Digits for?

It shortens large numbers for display — turning a long figure into a compact form so a big number stays readable at a large font size.

Why does our gap show a negative number?

The gap is First Item minus Second Item, so it goes negative when the second overtakes the first. Negative Color exists to make that legible — or swap the items if you always want a positive figure.
