How to Make an Animated Chart

Three steps. Around five minutes from spreadsheet to share-ready video.

  1. 1

    Import your data

Upload a CSV or Excel (XLSX) file, paste a Wikipedia table, or type the data in. One row per period and one column per item.

  2. 2

Pick a chart type and style it

Choose a bar, line, map, pie or any other chart race, then set colors, fonts, speed, logos and flags in the visual editor.

  3. 3

    Export the video

Render an MP4 for YouTube, TikTok or Reels, or embed the interactive chart on a website.

What Is an Animated Chart?

An animated chart plays your data back over time. Instead of one static snapshot, each frame shows a single period — a year, month or day — and the chart moves smoothly from one to the next.

That motion is what makes the format work. A static chart shows where things ended up; an animated one shows how they got there. Viewers watch a country climb a ranking, a brand overtake its rival, or a trend line bend, and the change itself becomes the story. It is why chart race videos travel so well on YouTube, TikTok and Reels.

Different data calls for a different shape. Rankings read best as a bar chart race or, past about twenty items, a table chart race. Trends where the history matters suit a line chart race. Geography belongs on a map chart race, and parts of a whole on a pie or treemap race. The chart type guide covers all seventeen types and how many items each can carry.

Building animated charts used to mean Python and matplotlib, D3.js, or hours in After Effects. Alien Art removes that step. Import a CSV or Excel file, choose a type, set colors, fonts, logos and speed in a visual editor, and export a video you can post straight away. New to it? The getting started guide takes you from an empty project to a finished video in about ten minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated

What is the easiest way to make an animated chart?

Use a browser-based animated chart maker. In Alien Art Charts you import a CSV or Excel file, pick a chart type, adjust the design in a visual editor, and export a video. There is nothing to install and no code to write.

Is the animated chart maker free?

Yes, you can start free with no credit card. The free plan renders videos up to 3 minutes long with 30 minutes of monthly export budget at 30 fps in MP4. Pro removes the watermark, adds 60 fps, WebM and transparent WebP export, and lifts the monthly limit.

Which chart types can I animate?

Seventeen project types, including bar, line, pie, bubble, treemap, table and map chart races, head-to-head comparisons, combination layouts that stack two charts, slideshows, and animated chat histories. Any of them can also be rendered as a single still image.

What data do I need?

A spreadsheet with one row per period (a year, month or day) and one column per item you want to animate, such as a country, brand or channel. Optional header rows attach logos and colors to each item, and gaps between periods are interpolated.

Can I export my animated chart as a video?

Yes. Every project exports as an MP4 video ready for YouTube, Shorts, TikTok, Reels or a presentation. Pro also exports WebM and transparent WebP, so the chart can sit over your own footage in a video editor.

Can I use the videos commercially?

Yes. Exports can be used on monetized YouTube channels, in client work, in presentations and on broadcast.
